Zirconium crucibles are ideal for melting other metals because zirconium has better mechanical strength at high temperatures than most other metals. Compared with nickel crucibles, zirconium crucibles are more costly but have better cost-effectiveness because the number of fusions that can be performed in zirconium crucibles is much higher than other metals. Unlike platinum, zirconium crucibles require minimal maintenance and will not act as a catalyst for oxidation and reaction. The corrosion resistance of zirconium comes from a tightly adhering oxide zirconia, which is formed almost instantaneously. Therefore, in addition to hydrofluoric acid, zirconium crucibles can resist almost all acids. Therefore, HF is the only cleaner that should not be used for zirconium crucibles.
