Hafnium is the core structural material of water-cooled nuclear reactors. Due to the high thermal neutron capture ability of hafnium, the hafnium tube is used as the neutron absorber of the reactor control rod. This component in the reactor is called the hafnium control rod.

Production Process:

The process characteristics of hafnium tube and rod production are quite similar to that of zirconium. That is different compared to both:

  1. cold hot plastic deformation resistance of hafnium is higher than that of zirconium, so the hot working temperature of hafnium is also higher than that of zirconium;
  2. The cold hot plastic processing of hafnium can be carried out in the range of α phase (dense hexagonal);
  3. The plastic processing technology and heat treatment of hafnium are relatively simple;
  4. Hafnium has stronger oxidation resistance than zirconium during hot working, and hafnium is hardly affected by nitrogen;
